Information For Families

For Parents

Everything you need to know about RTMA before your child steps onto the mat. Clear answers. No surprises.

We know parents have questions — and we believe you deserve straightforward, honest answers. Below is everything we are asked most often. If you do not see what you are looking for, we are always happy to talk.

What Will My Child Learn?

Your child will learn traditional Taekwondo — kicks, forms (poomsae), self-defense, board breaking, and sparring fundamentals. Beyond technique, we teach discipline, respect, focus, and confidence that carry into school and home life.

How Often Should My Child Train?

We recommend two to three classes per week for steady progress. Consistency matters more than intensity. Students who train regularly develop muscle memory, confidence, and friendships faster than those who cram before a test.

How Does Belt Testing Work?

Testing is a milestone — not a race. Students are evaluated on skill, knowledge, poomsae, kicking technique, physical development, training consistency, discipline, conduct, and overall readiness. Tests occur approximately every three months, and dates are announced well in advance so families can prepare.

What Is The Stripe System?

Between belt tests, students earn four stripes to mark specific achievements: Yellow Stripe (first half of poomsae), Blue Stripe (completion of poomsae), Knowledge Stripe (terminology and curriculum), and Breaking Stripe (kicking technique for board breaking). Every stripe is earned — not given.

What Should My Child Bring?

For the first few classes, comfortable athletic wear and a water bottle are all that is needed. Once enrolled, students wear the official RTMA uniform (dobok). We will guide you through sizing and ordering — it is simple and affordable.

What Happens If We Miss Class?

Life happens. We offer classes six days a week with multiple time slots, so most families can make up missed sessions within the same week. Consistency is encouraged, but we work with busy schedules — not against them.

When Are Testing Dates?

Testing dates are announced ahead of time so families can plan. They typically fall approximately every three months. You will receive notice through our member portal, email, and in-class announcements. We never surprise a student with a test they are not ready for.

What Equipment Is Required?

Beginners need only a dobok. As students advance, we introduce protective sparring gear (headgear, chest guard, gloves, shin guards, mouthguard, and foot pads). We will tell you exactly when each item is needed — no unnecessary purchases upfront.

Can Parents Watch?

Absolutely. Parents are welcome to observe classes from our designated viewing area. We ask that you remain quiet and avoid coaching from the sidelines so your child can focus on the instructor and build independence on the mat.

Can My Child Compete?

Yes. RTMA students regularly compete in local, state, and national tournaments in poomsae, sparring, and board breaking. Competition is optional — we support students who want to compete and respect those who prefer to focus on personal growth.

What Happens After Black Belt?

Earning a black belt is the beginning, not the end. Students continue into advanced dan ranks, instructor training, leadership programs, and specialized classes. Many of our black belts become assistant instructors and mentors to younger students.
